One thousand Xbox One owners will be able to play a closed version of the Sea of Thieves Alpha between the 16th– 18th of December.

The Alpha itself is an opportunity for players to both get an early look at the highly anticipated title as well as make meaningful changes to the game through their feedback. However, any members of the Alpha will be made to sign an NDA (non-disclosure agreement) so as to protect the games secrets.

There will be a number of technical Alpha slots available in the months before the games release but the first one will start December 16th.

On their recent blog post about the decision they, Rare wrote:

“We’re overjoyed to see that thousands of eager gamers have already signed up for our Insider Programme, but the scale of the weekend’s session will be limited to 1000 players only. This gives us the right scale and experience for our first test, and will allow us to focus closely on the feedback we receive. As we move on through the Technical Alpha phase, we’ll gradually increase the player base and frequency of sessions in line with the games evolution.”
