It was only a matter of time before it happened, but there’s another reboot in the works of one of the best movies of the 90’s. Yep, Starship Troopers is getting the makeover treatment.
The Hollywood Reporter announced that the reboot is being handled by Columbia Pictures, and Baywatch scribes Mark Swift and Damian Shannon have been hired to write the script.
Neal H. Moritz, the producer behind the Fast & Furious franchise, is producing with Toby Jaffe, who produced an abysmal reboot of another Paul Verhoeven classic – Total Recall.
Starship Troopers, which was released in 1997, is based on the novel of the same name by Robert A. Heinlein. It tells the story of soldier Johnny Rico, who moves up the ranks in the military during mankind’s war on alien bugs.
Both the book and film contain some biting satire pertaining to military fascism and propaganda. The movie produced two critically derided sequels, which are both pretty awesome in their own right even if they aren’t conventionally good films. This reboot promises to be more true to the Heinlein’s novel.
