I’m sure 99% of people will agree with me when I say girls are pretty awesome. Growing up in the 90’s made me realise how great being a girl was with Lara Croft and The Spice Girls playing a major nostalgic role in my younger years. It’s no different with anime. There’s a wiafu out there for everyone and today I’m going to give you the run down of my top 5 females in anime.

    5) Yuno Gasai – Future Diary

“A half moon. It has a dark half and a bright half, just like me…”

To kick things off, I’m starting with anime’s Yandere Goddess, Yuno Gasai. As the main female role in Future Diary, it’s her job to protect her destined soulmate, Yukki. Sweet as sugar with her adorable voice and candyfloss pink do, she’s a total cutie. Or so we think. This girl is psychotic. She’ll do anything in her power to keep her and Yukki alive throughout the process of Deus’ twisted Battle Royal like game, which mainly consists of countless acts of murder. The fluctuation of personalities between Yuno’s cute and crazy side is really interesting to watch. It keeps things unpredictable and you often find yourself questioning Yuno’s true motives as some of her actions are completely insane. I wouldn’t put Future Diary down as one of the best anime’s I’ve seen but Yuno certainly leaves an impression with her unhinged ways.

    4) Revy – Black Lagoon

    “If you were a man, you’d drink Rum. but… you’re just a shit who even can’t challenge a woman…”

‘Bad gal’ is the phrase which instantly comes to mind when I think of Revy. Also known as ‘Two Hands’, Revy is the crass, potty mouth killing machine of the Lagoon Company. With her tragic and gritty background shaping her into the ruthless and battle hardened person she in now, she doesn’t back down and is a loyal asset to Dutch, Benny and Rock (even though she might not always show it). The fight scene involving her and Roberta in the shipyard displays Revy’s personality from every angle and is thrilling to watch from start to finish. If you like ladies who know how to get the job done and are unimaginably rude and sarcastic, Revy is the one for you.

    3) Olivier Mira Armstrong – Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

“Love for the dead is pointless. We fight to keep them alive, that is all.”

It takes us a while to be introduced to Olivier in Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, but trust me it’s worth it. Not only is Olivier a complete knock out, but she’s the commanding officer at Fort Briggs and knows how to take control of a situation. With her no-nonsense, curt tone, it’s hard to believe shes related to gentle giant, Alexander Louis of the State Military and although she may seem like a bitch to start off, you soon begin to respect her authority and acknowledge her power and presence within the vast collection of characters Fullmetal Alchemist has to offer.

    2) Akane Tsunemori – Psycho Pass

“The law doesn’t protect people. People Protect the law”

I’ve got to be honest, seeing Tsunemori develop throughout the two seasons of Psycho Pass has got to be one of the most satisfying things I’ve seen in a character. Despite her dedicated, loyal and compassionate personality, Tsunemori is flawed in the beginning with her naive ideological view on society. After discovering Sybil’s dirty secrets, she accepts it and manages to deal with it for the greater good. Following Tsunemori through the ups and downs of her career which shape her into the head-strong, dedicated inspector she transforms into is a joy to witness and I’m sure you’ll adore just as much as I did.

    1) Misato Katsuragi – Neon Genesis Evangelion

“Acts of men are better than acts of God”

So here we are at the number one spot where I get to gush over anime’s queen bee (at least in my opinion), Misato Katsuragi. Misato makes a bang from the start and it lasts throughout the duration of Eva. Captain of operations at NERV, it’s her job to command Shinji, Asuka and Rei throughout their war with the Angels and help keep humanity alive. She’s dedicated, stubborn and professional in her day job which is more than can be said for her lax home lifestyle. A lover of junk food and a professional beer chugger, Misato is what most boys dreamt of back in 1995 and it’s what I aspire to be. The relationship she shares with Shinji is a quality I adored from the start from their disagreements to her words of encouragement when Shinji feels like the world is crumbling around him. Hideaki Anno’s creation of a selfless, beautiful and courageous female lead paired with her bold personality and unconventional habits make her unique and memorable from start to finish. I love Misato and I will never stop loving Misato for as long and I deem necessary.

This was honestly harder than I thought it would be but trust me when I say there are a TON of ladies out there that I love just as much as the five listed above. For all anime loves some fan service with the females, there’s always going to be a multitude of powerful, funny and ass-kicking ladies out there to counteract this. So if your initial thoughts of anime girls is just to get people to ogle over them, then take a gander at the series’ above and with any luck, they should prove you wrong and support the age old phrase of ‘girl power’ down to a tee
