In “a dream come true” for The Similars writer/director Isaac Ezban, German company Goodleg Toys has created action figures commemorating three characters from that film, an exciting science fiction/horror hybrid about a group of people stranded in a remote Mexican bus station. This fun, highly stylized valentine to The Twilight Zone and classic sci-fi cinema made both the “Staff Picks: Top 10 Favourite Things of 2016” and “The Top 15 Overlooked Movies of 2016” lists for That’s Not Current.

“This means a lot to me,” Isaac Ezban said in his Facebook post announcement. “First of all, those who have already seen the movie will understand the importance of toys and dolls in the story, but besides that, I must confess that I was always a kid who played a lot with dolls, even up to [the] ripe old age . . . of 12. I have the Batcave and all the dolls of Batman, everything from Waterworld, everything from Jurassic Park, everything from The Heart of a Dragon . . . and I could spend hours, even at 12 or 13 years old, imagining stories with these dolls. Therefore, it is a dream come true that now dolls [exist for] one of my movies.”

Goodleg Toys released the action figures on February 13. The characters of Ulises (played by Sanchez Parra Gustavo), Ignacio (Santiago Torres) and Martin (Fernando Becerril) are brought to handmade collectible resin life in vivid detail. “If these dolls are selling well, soon they’ll want to [release] Roberta (Maria Elena Olivares Actriz ), Alvaro (Humberto Busto), Irene (Cassandra Ciangherotti), Gertrude (Carmen Beato) and Rosa (Catalina Salas), so I hope they sell well,” said Ezban. “But I warn you, be careful, because if [you] put one of those dolls in your house, they could all start to become . . .” he said, in reference to his film. No spoilers here on what they might become, because That’s Not Current readers who have yet to see The Similars need to go into the film as fresh as possible.

The first three limited edition The Similars action figures are available at http://goodlegtoys.storenvy.com/products/19115302-los-parecidos-the-similars-figures-official. Ezban announced two types of discounts: a special price for those buying the full set of three figures, and regardless of whether customers buy one, two, or three dolls, they can use the code teardownallwalls to get a 15% discount on their purchase (this code is only valid this month, according to Ezban’s post).
