Paperbacks from Hell, Grady Hendrix’s affectionate tribute to schlocky paperback horror novels from yesteryear, is one of the best books I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading. The author’s unadulterated love and respect for these disreputable works of fiction makes for not only one of the most entertaining books in recent memory, but also a very inspirational one. Hendrix understands the appeal of these wacky stories, and his book does an excellent job of giving them the due they deserve. We need more books that ooze of that kinda love.
But if you read Paperbacks from Hell, chances are you came out of it with a massive shopping list of books to pick up — featuring stories about evil clowns, evil children, devil cults, and Nazi elves, and other wacky ideas that haven’t been commonplace since the 80’s. Since then, most of these books have been out of print and cost an absolute bomb to buy online, but that’s all about to change.
Valancourt Books, who specialise in publishing forgotten, OOP horror fiction, have struck a deal with Quirk Books, to reissue some of the hellish titles featured in Paperbacks from Hell. Check out their Facebook announcement below:
“An official announcement and full list of titles will be coming soon, but in the meantime we wanted to let you know we’ve signed an agreement with Quirk Books, publishers of PAPERBACKS FROM HELL, to publish a limited series of reissues of novels featured in PFH, to be edited by Grady Hendrix and Will Errickson (Too Much Horror Fiction). Subscribe to our email newsletter or keep an eye on our website blog for more updates on this exciting series!”
As the post states, a full list of titles will be revealed in the near future. If you want to stay on top of the announcements, you can sign up for their newsletter here. This is an exciting time to be alive, as lots of these books are damn near impossible to find. Which titles would you like to see released?
In the meantime, if you haven’t read Paperbacks from Hell: What in the paperback from Hell are you doing with your life? Head on over to Amazon and buy it now. Check out the official synopsis below:
“Take a tour through the horror paperback novels of the 1970s and 80s . . . if you dare. Page through dozens and dozens of amazing book covers featuring well-dressed skeletons, evil dolls, and knife-wielding killer crabs! Read shocking plot summaries that invoke devil worship, satanic children, and haunted real estate! Horror author and vintage paperback book collector Grady Hendrix offers killer commentary and witty insight on these trashy thrillers that tried so hard to be the next Exorcist or Rosemary s Baby. It s an affectionate, nostalgic, and unflinchingly funny celebration of the horror fiction boom of two iconic decades, complete with story summaries and artist and author profiles. You ll find familiar authors, like V. C. Andrews and R. L. Stine, and many more who ve faded into obscurity. Plus recommendations for which of these forgotten treasures are well worth your reading time and which should stay buried.”
