These days, all of our favourite things are being made and rebooted. Whether it’s a classic movie or a cult favourite TV show, nothing is sacred anymore. In some rare cases, though, reboots are much better than their predecessors. Hopefully the latest reboot will fall into the latter category.
According to the fine folks over at That’s Not Current, their website is being rebooted. Things have been quiet on the site for the past year or so, leading many to believe that it was on the road out. However, it was just on the backburner while everyone regrouped behind the scenes and figured out their ambitions going forward.
The first iteration of TNC was a mixed bag. Despite producing lots of content they’re proud of and assembling a team of talented folks, the site had no idea what it wanted to be or where it wanted to go. As a result, a lot of random ideas were introduced. Some ideas worked; others didn’t. Since then, however, the site’s creators have developed a clearer vision about what their aims are going forward and they plan on sticking to the plan.
“We had no idea what we were doing a couple of years ago. If we could start from scratch we would,“ said TNC co-founder Kieran Fisher. “When we launched the site we were overly excited and wanted to get it up and running as soon as possible. After that, it was a free-for-all until life got in the way and commanded our attention elsewhere.”
The distractions proved to be invaluable in the grand scheme of things, though. During the site’s dormant periods, everyone was honing their crafts elsewhere and learning more about the world of digital publishing.
“Working for some more experienced and successful outlets has been a pivotal experience. Not only have we developed as writers ourselves, but we now feel more equipped to deliver content that appeals to a wider readership while still remaining true to ourselves and our interests.”
But what will this entail? What’s the plan going forward? According to Fisher, the TNC reboot will retain some elements of the original, but presented in a way that’s more mainstream appealing and consistent.
“First and foremost, no idea is off the table. We’ll still be experimenting from time to time and learning as we grow. You can still expect some weird, playful, and silly content occasionally. Some old ideas will be re-introduced as well; but the priority is to nourish readers and make them feel compelled to visit the site on a daily basis. We’ll also publish features on a daily basis.”
He continued: “Overall, we will be focusing primarily on long-form features that are fun, informative, thought-provoking, and feel like they were written by a real person with a personality. Expect a diverse array of voices to engage your minds.”
Finally, TNC also has plans to spread its wings in the Youtube arena. While the site has flirted with video content in the past, they want to produce it regularly in the coming months. “This is still a work in progress, but Youtube is something we want to take advantage of. We already have some mini-documentaries, fun lists, and video essays in development. Stay tuned for those in the near future.”
The TNC reboot will be integrated over the coming weeks, but for the time being, the team is locked in preparation mode. “Right now we’re stockpiling some features to roll out in the New Year so we have some momentum, but you can expect to see some fun stuff over the holiday season. 2019 will see us entering Boss Mode, though.”
