In what might just be the best, most unexpected news this year, Mike Mignola has announced that there is going to be a new R-rated Hellboy movie. And the best part? It’s going to be directed by Neil Marshall. NEIL FREAKING MARSHALL AND R-RATED!!!
A few months ago, Guillermo del Toro announced that Hellboy 3 was effectively dead in the water, so this announcement really is out of the blue. However, unlike the Mexican maestro’s film, this won’t see franchise star Ron Perlman reprising his role as Big Red. In fact, this sounds like a reboot, with Stranger Things‘ David Arbour playing our favorite cigar-chewing demon.
Of course, the best part of this announcement is that Neil Marshall will be returning to directing movies. Granted, Marshall’s track record of announcing mouth-watering projects only for them never to materialize is unsurpassed – and it’s not as if the Hellboy franchise has had much luck in recent years when it comes to a new movie coming to fruition – but I’m going to keep the faith here, because I need this more than the air I breathe. Without this movie in my life, I’d rather not breathe at all.
The last time we saw Hellboy on the big screen was in 2008s masterpiece, Hellboy II: The Golden Army. That’s nearly 10 years. Since then, I’ve gained weight, grown hairier and lost my youth. But I have never lost that childish glee that comes with the thought of another Hellboy happening….
Dear God, if you do exist, please make sure this happens.
