I’m a big champion for flicks and TV shows about fighting, so the upcoming Karate Kid series for Youtube Red, Cobra Kai, naturally piques my interest. Is it necessary? Probably not. But who doesn’t want to people do karate? Throw in the fact that some old friends will be returning, and it has potential.
Set over 30 years after the 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, the story follows Daniel-san (Ralph Macchio), now living as a family man with a success car dealership. His old nemesis, Johnny (William Zabka), meanwhile, isn’t having the best of luck in life and seeks to find redemption. However, upon crossing paths with each other, their old rivalry is resparked and Daniel decides to open the old Cobra Kai dojo that helped him become a karate champion. But Johnny isn’t about to let his old arch-rival have all the fun.
When the series was announced back in October, creators Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossburg promised “a true continuation of the original films — packed with comedy, heart and thrilling fight scenes.” Does the trailer indicate that?
Check it out below:
The trailer has its moments — and it’s too early to tell whether or not the series will be good — so I’m cautiously optimistic. While this soft reboot undoubtedly intends to milk our nostalgia juices, at least it serves as a natural continuation to the original movie. With so many old properties getting a straight remake treatment, it’s nice to see one come along that embraces its history while still providing an updated version for modern times.
Of course, stories of this ilk always have a place in our pop culture. I, for one, can never resist a movie or TV show that revolves around combat sports, especially when they give us a good underdog story. The original Karate Kid gave us a great against-all-odds narrative as Ralph rose the ranks from bullied victim to karate champion under the tutelage of his mentor, Mr. Miyagi (Pat Morita). From Rocky to Warrior, these tales have proven to be simple and timeless.
Will Cobra Kai introduce a new hero (or heroes) on the quest for glory, or will it just be a case of two old rivals bickering and trying to outdo each other?
If it’s a mere blast from the past it’ll be fun for awhile. But let’s hope that it focuses on the newcomers and lets a new hero come along and ascend to the world stage over several seasons. The trailer does give us a brief glimpse of an ass-kicking female who beats the crap out of her doubters, and focusing on her would be a great route to explore.
Previous attempts to reboot the series without the original stars resulted in a misfire. But maybe this time will be the charm. The OG’s are back to bridge the gap and integrate the new generation should they decide to go that route. Of course, we’d still love to see Daniel and Johnny throw down one last time as well.
The 10 episode series comes to Youtube Red on May 2.
